In my book, open shelving is the cat's meow. It's light, airy and can be accomplished in so many different ways. If you're going to have nice dishes and serveware, shouldn't you be able to show them off? I think so.
From what I can tell, there are only two negatives to open shelving. One, if you're not super organized ALL of the time, it can look cluttered. Two, having cupboard doors keeps the dust off of your dishes. When you don't have the doors, you don't have the dust blocker. If you can handle those two downfalls, this may be just the shelving option for you.
